Objective momentum barriers in wall turbulence

چکیده
We use the recent frame-indifferent theory of diffusive momentum transport to identify internal barriers in wall-bounded turbulence. Formed by invariant manifolds Laplacian velocity field, block viscous part instantaneous flux flow. employ level sets single-trajectory Lagrangian diagnostic tools, trajectory rotation average and stretching exponent, approximate both vortical wall-parallel barrier (MTB) interfaces. These interfaces provide alternatives classic velocity-gradient-based vortices high-shear boundaries between uniform zones (UMZs). Indeed, we find that these elliptic manifold approximations MTBs outperform standard UMZ blocking transport, suggesting our are physical features may be cause coherence signatures statistical non-objective diagnostics. also introduce normalized metrics unprecedented visualizations objective coherent structures avoiding strong turbulence biases.

High–Reynolds Number Wall Turbulence
We review wall-bounded turbulent flows, particularly high–Reynolds number, zero–pressure gradient boundary layers, and fully developed pipe and channel flows. It is apparent that the approach to an asymptotically high– Reynolds number state is slow, but at a sufficiently high Reynolds number the log law remains a fundamental part of the mean flow description. With regard to the coherent motions...
متن کاملCoherent structures in wall-bounded turbulence.
The inherent difficulty of understanding turbulence has led to researchers attacking the topic in many different ways over the years of turbulence research. Some approaches have been more successful than others, but most only deal with part of the problem. One approach that has seen reasonable success (or at least popularity) is that of attempting to deconstruct the complex and disorganised tur...
متن کاملHigh Reynolds number effects in wall turbulence
A review of recent discoveries from high Reynolds number studies of turbulent boundary layers is given. The emergent regime of very large-scale structures in the logarithmic region and their subsequent influence on the near-wall cycle challenges many of the previously held assumptions regarding scaling of turbulent boundary layers at high Reynolds numbers. Experimental results are presented to ...
